    I would imagine that the Indonesian police/justice system has handled the evidence and witnesses very badly, and they really dont want all the grim, embarrassing details brought to light.

    This might be coupled with some opportunism by the Indonesians to get put the Australian govt in a difficult position so that are seen as demanding a tough sentence for the terrorist bashir, while demanding a lenient sentence for their own citizen.

    It is hardly likely to be well handled by shrill statements to the press and by highlighting the defiecnies of the Indonesian legal system.

    Hard to say, but my guess is that the Aust govt plan (if they ever had one) might have been to let the court play it out, then see if they could negotiate her out of the worst of the trouble.
    But she might have just been seen by the Australian Govt as a sacrificial lamb also.

    A very nasty situation to find yourself in, really through the looking-glass.

    But when you travel, rule number 1 is to secure your belongings well.
