Mobutu was in power into the 1990's. So the assassination of Lumumba, while it happend 40 years ago, affected Congo right up until recently. Since then there has been a devastating civil war.

There are peaceful African countries, but they tend to be the poorer states. It's the rich states that are ironically basket cases, because everybody wants a piece of the action and its easy for Western corporations to buy off politicians and corrupt the political process.
