FT66 - Interests in the US, ie The Fed and their major shareholders the large investment banks, have for a number of years attempted to do just the question you ask. Their policy's have been consciously inflationary and they have attempted to supress the price of gold so that it appears that 'there is no inflation' (they also tamper with CPI stats for the same reason) and to give the impression the historical inflationary indicator should no longer be used for its real purpose.
This leads the 'average joe' to think 'everything is ok' They do the same with the S&P, except they support it, also in an attempt to ensure everyone thinks 'everything is ok'.
