I watched a 2 part doco (SBS) on an underwater survey of the Black Sea, looking for:
    1 shipwrecks
    2 evidence of ancient civilisations
3 an answer to the question of when and how the Black Sea became connected to the Mediterranean

The found about 50 wrecks ranging from a 2000 year old Roman vessel with its cargo of amphora intact, to a merchant vessel of the Ottoman Empire about 200 years old. Using photogrammetry techniques they were able to reconstruct many vessels in situ. And due to the anoxic nature of the water below about 150 metres much of the wrecks were intact, if too expensive to raise.
They were also able, through deep sea cores, to establish that the joining of the Med & Black Seas came about due to rising sa levels post-ice age rather than any apocalyptic event.

Worth seeing on SBS catch up if available.
