Global Electric Vehicles Will Be Just Fine, Says UBS

Investors are worried that weak oil prices could hurt the global electric car market, but UBS analysts say there is enough going on in the sector to keep it well protected.

Weak oil prices are a nonissue for Tesla and other EVs, says UBS.

What does an oil-price correction mean for the electric-vehicle industry?

Some investors are asking that question, with crude price down about 20% year-to-date amid a Saudi Arabia—Russia tussle over prices and coronavirus-demand fears.

Investors are worried that weak oil prices could undermine the advantages of electric vehicles over the gasoline-powered version, specifically in the U.S., according to UBS analysts Paul Gong, Patrick Hummel and Kohei Takahashi.

While lower oil prices could “undermine the comparative advantages” of EV over standard combustion cars, notably in the U.S., that may not be the case when it comes to the world’s two biggest EV markets — China and Europe.

For starters, gasoline prices in China are tied to global crude prices, but only within the $40 to $130 range and under $40 those drivers really don’t see gasoline much cheaper than around Rmb7/Liter ($1), said Hummel.

“Strategically, the Chinese government aims to develop a globally competitive auto industry in the EV era, and we believe continuous efficiency gains and cost cutting along the EV supply chain is much more predictable than oil price fluctuations,” said the analysts.

UBS said the EV market has been weak after a subsidy cut in the middle of last year, but their data reveals a two-month backlog for Tesla, which has just entered the Chinese market.

As for Europe, the biggest driver of EV in the next two years will be carbon dioxide compliance that requires auto industry to lower CO2 emission to 95g in 2021 from more than 120g in 2019, said UBS. After a recent chat with German auto lobbyists, they cite a risk that the new EU commission will further lift those targets from -37.5% by 2030 to -50% to 55%.

That is all in a bid for Europe to be CO2 neutral by 2050.

UBS recently raised its EV global sales forecast, driven by Europe growth.

“Our conviction remains unchanged in the multiyear migration to electric vehicles led by Europe and China,” the analysts said.

Globally, they said the best-positioned are Tesla, Volkswagen, Toyota and some leading Chinese original equipment manufacturers like GAC and Geely.

Clean transport allocated $2bn in UK budget, with focus on EV rapid charge hubs

The conservative UK government will allocate £1 billion ($A2 billion) to increase a roll-out of electric car charging hubs and extend its Plug-In Grant under its latest budget.

The clean transport focus is part of an £8 billion ($A16 billion) in funding being directed to climate change solutions, including carbon capture and tree planting, announced in the 2020 UK budget on Wednesday (UK time) by Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak.

Sunak said in the two-hour delivery to the British house of commons, “Green jobs, better flood defences, cheaper electric vehicles, innovative new technology. We promised to protect our environment, we’re getting it done.”

Included in the boost to green measures are £500 million ($A 1 billion) to support the rollout of a super-fast DC electric vehicle charging network £533 million ($A1.6 billion) to extend the UK Plug-in Grant schemes for ultra-low emission vehicles to 2023.

Other green measures include freezing climate change levies on electricity and increasing tax rates on gas from April 2022, although fuel duty will also remain frozen despite its environmental impacts.

Another £300 million ($A600 million) will go towards tackling toxic nitrogen dioxide emissions in towns and cities.

Work has already started on an electric vehicle charging forecourt in Essex, one of 100 planned “electric fuel stations” that will be deployed by sustainable energy company Gridserve.

Supported by a £4.86 million ($A9.6 million) grant from Innovate UK, the electric forecourt at Great Notley, near Braintree, Essex will be the “most advanced charging facility in the UK” according to Gridserve chief executive Toddington Harper.

“We’ve designed our electric forecourts entirely around the needs of electric vehicle drivers, updating the petrol station model for a net-zero carbon future,” said Harper in a statement.

“Many more people want to buy electric vehicles but are worried about how to charge them.”

The UK has had a massive head start on Australia in the transition to electric vehicles, with a policy first introduced in 2011 that currently provides for a maximum £3,500 ($A7,000) towards the purchase of a plug-in vehicle including cars, motorcycles, mopeds, vans, taxis and trucks.

To date it has supported the purchase of more than 200,000 low emissions vehicles, half of which are zero-emissions 100% electric vehicles.

The grant extension will see an additional £403 million ($A806 million) provided for the purchase of electric cars, and £129.5 million ($A259 million) go towards the purchase of electric vans, taxis and motorcycles.

Australia, by comparison, is yet to introduce any kind of solid electric vehicle strategy.

It is understood that a portion of the $A68.5 million being directed to the new RACE for 2030 cooperative research centre for clean energy will be used towards electric vehicles, although details of that were not immediately available from the new CRC.

A strategy aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles is expected to be announced by mid-2020 by the Angus Taylor-led office of energy and emissions reductions, and will be funded out of the so-called $3.5 billion “Climate Solutions Package”.

“The strategy will ensure a planned and managed transition to this new vehicle technology,” a spokesperson from Taylor’s office told The Driven by email.

“The strategy, to be finalised by mid-2020 will focus on practical actions to address barriers to EV uptake, so that Australians who choose to adopt new technologies are supported in doing so.”

Tesla Is #1 In Transportation Among World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies 2020

Tesla took 3rd place in the ranking of the most innovative companies in the world, becoming the only automaker to get on this list and 1st place in the ranking of the most innovative transport companies in the world.

Innovation in its modern meaning is "a new idea, creative thoughts, new imaginations in form of device or method". Such innovation takes place through the provision of more-effective products, processes, services, technologies, or business models that are made available to markets, governments and society. An innovation is something original and more effective and, as a consequence, new, that "breaks into" the market or society.

Innovative companies are organizations whose activities are directly related to high-tech production. Today, there are many innovative companies that make our life better.

This year, Fast Company editors and writers sought innovative business in 44 sectors, including all regions of the world. They evaluated each company for a combination of innovation and influence, focusing on what was achieved last year. In total, 434 organizations were considered, but among them the 50 most innovative were selected.

This annual ranking of enterprises, which have the most profound effect on both industry and culture, demonstrates various ways of prosperity in today's unstable world.

According to this study, Tesla was included in the list of the 50 most innovative companies in the world. It should be noted that the company took 3rd place, which once again emphasizes the contribution that it makes to the development of our world.

"After estimating it would deliver at least 360,000 vehicles last year, Tesla delivered 367,500. That's double the number of cars it sold in the previous two years combined. And with that, a company built on a battery-powered wing and a billionaire's prayer finally became a mass-market automaker."

Over the past decade, many solutions have been proposed to eliminate environmental losses in transport: electrification, public transport and alternative vehicles have been proposed as solutions.

Thanks to the main goal of Tesla, in addition to the fact that the automaker took 3rd place in the overall ranking of innovative companies, it took 1st place in the ranking of the most innovative transport companies.

    The Fast Company notes that:

    • Tesla was able to deliver a record number of cars for 2019 and began to make a profit;
    • last year, Tesla opened a new factory in China and began deliveries cars to the world's largest electric car market;
    • the company continues to create amazing products such as Cybertruck.

The contribution of the California automaker is hard to overestimate. Tesla cars are a disruption of modern transportation. The technologies that the company uses in its cars are several years ahead of all modern developments.

Also Tesla has made incredible strides in battery development, making it a leader in the field.

Tesla Cybertruck Will Be The Best Choice for All Police Departments

Cybertruck is one of the most exciting cars that were introduced in 2019. It has a “heart-stopping” design, with better utility than a Ford F-150 and superior performance to a basic Porsche 911.

Police departments around the world previously purchased Tesla cars for police service. As it is not difficult to guess, Cybertruck interested them with even greater force.

As Elon Musk promised, the Tesla Cybertruck is not like any other pickup that we can all see today. The car looks like a futuristic armored personnel carrier, which generally matches its description. An angular exterior, a large bed and unbelievably stunning wheels.

Thick sturdy stainless steel case that didn't deform even from the impact of a heavy sledgehammer. And armored windows protect passengers from even the most unexpected situations. This is exactly what is very important for police cars to ensure the safety of police officers who, for example, are caught in a street shootout.

In addition to its impressive protective performance, Cybertruck, despite its size, is nimble thanks to instant torque and all-wheel drive. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in an impressive 2.9 seconds is exactly what will be needed during the chase. None of the cars will be able to withstand the speed, performance and reliability of Cybertruck.

In addition to providing excellent protection and impressive speed, Cybertruck will be very economical. After calculations, the police departments conclude that Tesla equipped with Sentry Mode doesn't need additional cameras, so less money is spent on conversion. The cost of maintenance remains very low, since in an electric car there is practically nothing to break. The next undoubted advantage is the low charge cost compared to gasoline/diesel cars.

All this makes the purchase of Cybertruck cost-effective, and reasonable in terms of security for police officers.

This conclusion was reached by the police departments. Tesmanian previously reported that Tesla received reservation orders for 15 Cybertrucks from the mayor of Cuidad Valles, a municipality in San Luis Potosí, Mexico.

Mayor Adrián Esper Cárdenas said the choice of this car is "common sense." He reserved 15 Cybertrucks for the municipality of Cuidad Valles for about MXN $30K or a little over US $1,550.

The amount of money he paid to reserve Tesla's pickup trucks is about a month’s worth of income, reported El Imparcial.

The Mayor ordered 10 dual-motor AWD Cybertrucks, which is priced at US $49,900 or about MXN $980K, and 5 tri-motor AWD Cybertrucks, which costs US $69,900 or more than MXN $1.37 million.

In total, his order will cost about MXN $16 million, or about US $820K.

However, based on his calculations the all-electric pickups could save the administration up 24 million pesos a year in maintenance costs and gas expenses.

The OPP Highway Safety Division is also keen to buy Cybertruck.

In February, they posted a tweet in which they asked Musk for advice on which vehicle they should choose as their police car, Cybertruck or Model X.

A few days later their tweet was complemented by another message. They wrote that their choice is toward Cybertruck. The OPP asked if Tesla would work with them to design emergency lighting, storage compartments and a partition for officers safety.

So it seems that the #CyberTruck is coming out on top@elonmusk, would you work with the OPP to design emergency lighting, storage compartments and a partition for officer safety?

    — OPP Highway Safety Division (@OPP_HSD) February 22, 2020
Official account in Twitter of Kansas Highway Patrol PIO serving North Central Kansas (USA) and Dubai Police (UAE) also already expressed its interest in using Cybertruck for the necessities of their police stations.

In fact, Tesla Cybertruck is the perfect car for cops.

Robust bulletproof body, bulletproof glass, 6 seats, large payload capacity, the ability to carry bulk cargo, super-fast acceleration and a formidable look. This beast is the perfect combination of the best features.
