Summary:
1) Magnetite, which makes up 90 per cent of South Australia’s iron-ore supply, presents the state with the opportunity to make DRI-grade iron ore and to become an H2-DRI exporter, given the potential for green-hydrogen production in the country. This shift in focus from iron-ore mining from hematite to magnetite, in a sustainable way, is an important consideration in the green steel transition
2) Almost 40 per cent of steel producing nations will NOT have access to cheap Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and natural gas or the possibility to have CCS, and only 36 per cent of the nations will have access to cheap renewable energy at scale and natural gas31
3) The existing supply chains will be impacted, presenting what’s also referred to as the ‘location dilemma’ for where to produce green iron or steel in efforts to decarbonise the process economically.
4) Currently, Germany has 22 EAF plants,54 Japan has 25 and South Korea has 14 Having the existing EAF facilities gives these countries an advantage in switching from traditional DRI to H2-DRI
5) More than 70 per cent of coal-based BF-BOF plants can potentially be switched to H2-DRI technologies
6) It is predicted that about 90 per cent of the remaining 690 Mt blast-furnace capacity that will need to be relined in the 2020s will reach their end of life by 2040, enabling them to be phased out within this time without a premature shutdown
7) A global race has started for green iron production
