As the steel industry reduces its carbon emissions, direct reduced iron’s (DRI) share in metallics will double to 13% by 2050 in the base case and accelerate to 28% in net zero scenario. Cost parity for green steel with the conventional production route will translate into a premium of US$150/tonne of steel. The answer to “Who will foot the bill?” is still evolving, but at this point, the premium is expected to have a relatively limited impact of 1-3% on major end-use price tags."
Look at the bottom right photo, the cost of creating steel using coal is going to EXCEED H2 DRI-EAF and all of the other green methods due to carbon taxes, lower coal supply (mines are not allowed to open affecting coal supply), etc. Governments will stop green lighting coal mines llike what Australia did recently in Queensland.
