And eventually short sellers have to cover. MFG is at zero risk of raising capital which is a short sellers wet dream. So short sellers will have to buy back eventually.
Having said this, some short sellers are actually holders hedging their exit position. If one is a large holder: short sell to cover position, and then repay the physically owned shares. Enables the 'holder' to move more quickly. Used in conjuction with option put strategy.
