uneducated migrants helped oz develop

Soon after WW2 there was a massive influx of migrants from countries predominantly European. Later it was Asian migrants many from Vietnam. Many were non English speaking and most had minimal if any education. These migrants never-the-less came here worked their butts off clearing land for farming and did a lot of the hard yakka of the times. They brought with them a strong sense of family values and a work ethic of which any country would be proud. Initially they suffered discrimination much the same way as migrants do now but over time this diminished though it is never completed eradicated.

LOL in those days(and I am showing my age) garlic used to be a no no amongst every day Australians and was used as a derogatory term against Italians along with other unpleasant terms. Later when we had an influx of migration from Asia, mainly Vietnam similar discrimination occurred. Now in fact we have evolved into a country with diverse culinary attributes that are great on our taste buds and enhance a more tolerant approach to difference. The garlic munchers are no longer ridiculed as such given garlic is now one of the desired must have ingredients in our cooking. Similarly soy sauce from Asia and all manner of Asian cooking is highly sought after.

These supposedly non educated migrants gave their children the opportunities they never had and they made sure their kids took advantage of the educational opportunities provided to all Australians by respective governments. Many took advantage of free university study under provisions brought in by a past Government.
Many low income families from all areas of Australian society took advantage of the scholarships issued to bright students that could not otherwise continue their studies.

We are now a more affluent country and migrants played a huge part in this.

This country has proven that its social democracy is a successful model and fortunately up till now both Labor/Liberal have operated as social democrats that uses taxation to assist Australians to have a better quality of life. What we don't need now is Tea Party politics that would undermine all the advances achieved over the years.
