"so if they don't buy a house.. and they don't rent.. then where do they live? "
Well I know a young bloke who is a good example... just lost his Job. He is renting a flat locally and will be moving back to his parents who are putting together a self contained sleep-out for him and his girlfriend.
Others who lose their jobs will downgrade to caravan parks.
or move back to parents or even consolidate with 2 sets of partners sharing a house.
I see more caravans with people living in backyards than before and I get around many properties in a week...
Granny flats will spring up etc. Caravans will be seen more on industrial properties as it gives them a place to live and provides added security..
This is quite common in the US..
