hi yesterdaze
with the Great Lakes, it might have a connection with Lake Erie about 380 squares kilometres and a lot deeper that our china lakes ? About 4 to 5 years ago they looked at phoslock but backed away. Costs was probably a factor, but they might of started to add up the lost economic costs to the region over the years because of their algae problems and rethinking. Plenty of articles about the problems they have , might be with the work being done in china big lakes they now have a better understanding that phoslock can work on large bodies not just small one. If the treatment on xingyun successful it starts to open up these large lakes, Phoslock will not only be seen as a small lake option.
with alum, someone like inchiquin has probably done a big research on in the past. Basically alum is cheaper that's why USA has been hard to crack. Other areas like Europe I believe it is banned.
I was reading a report yesterday on a lake in Washington can't remember the name maybe something like loam? Sounded like they was going to use alum because of cost, phoslock had be considered. The cost of the alum treatment was about $350k but it didn't give the cost for a phoslock treatment so can't tell you the difference. The part I found interesting in the report went along the lines, that although in some states the use of alum is banned it wasn't in Washington so we can go for the cheaper option. This raises the question which states have banned alum ? Is there a push to ban in other states? The alum industry might be starting to loose some of their grip in the USA which would only benefit us.
thanks
