There's one potential flaw in your argument for freedom to have guns for self-defence.

How many incidents have there been, in Oz or US, where this has occurred? I recall just one in recent memory.

Compare this with the number of casualties from domestic as well as random shootings.

Having said that, gun control also worries me; I prefer more simple legal restrictions. Grew up on a farm with a 22 under my bed (for shooting rabbits) with no concerns.
