Gun control is NEVER going to stop crims getting guns but gun control laws can help prevent certain gun related crimes such as domestic related crimes and crimes were some nutter gets hold of a gun and goes out shooting people.

The gun controls introduced after Port Arthur were needed and justified in Australia even though they may have gon e a bit to far in the restrictions in teh types of guns that a person could own. If you have a legitimate purpose to own a gun in Australia, you can generally own a gun. Those that are prevented from owning a gun even though they can prove a legitimate reason for owning are in most cases people who should not be allowed near guns.

There is though no legitimate reason to own a gun that has been designed for no other purpose than to kill a large number of people in a very short period of time.
