Unisys Defence contract a boon for Candle/Peoplebank
Unisys's big IT support contract for the Department of Defence (see related article),
has proved a boon for the two recruitment companies handing the business, Peoplebank and Candle, with around 330 permanent hires already made, and another 50 positions still to be filled.

Unisys head of communications Claire Hosegood told Shortlist the latest round of hires was in South Australia, with most of them based at the RAAF Edinburgh base in Adelaide.

Hosegood said the RPO featured dedicated Candle and Peoplebank consultants who worked collectively on the project, and were based in their own offices rather than onsite.

She said all of Unisys's non-Defence contract and temporary recruitment was still done through its existing arrangement with Talent2.

She said Unisys had signed the deal with Candle and Peoplebank shortly after it announced the Defence contract, in February this year.

The full contract was expected to cover around 380 roles in total, over an 18-month transition period, she said.

Hosegood noted that 60% of existing Defence ICT staff who had been approached had shown interest in transitioning to roles with Unisys.

    HiTech posts lacklustre FY08 result
HiTech Personnel, the smallest of the listed recruitment companies, has reported flat revenue for the year to June, and a drop in net profit after tax.

NPAT fell 16.5% to $218k, on turnover of $5.1 million, up 0.7%.

HiTech chairman and CEO Ray Hazouri said the profit decline was largely to due to increased consultant costs, higher tax, and share market falls at the end of year which meant the company had to take up an unrealised losses on investments.

Hazouri said the company's outlook for the year ahead was "optimistic", but would "depend primarily on the prevailing economic conditions".

He said HiTech had no debt, and its current share price of 3 cents did not reflect the company's real value and was well below even the sum of its tangible assets.

Geoff Slade to speak on sustainable recruiting
Highly-regarded recruitment executive Geoff Slade will speak at a series of RCSA lunches in Australia and New Zealand during September.

The presentations, starting in Auckland on September 2, and finishing in Perth on September 23, will focus on creating a sustainable recruitment career.

RCSA CEO Julie Mills said recruiters of all levels could benefit from Slade's insights into working efficiently and staying competitive, which he had gained during 40 years' experience in recruitment.

    Spectrum Employment Services hits wall
Leading not-for-profit job labour hire and recruitment business, Spectrum Employment Services, has gone into administration.

Spectrum was established in 1995 initially as a labour hire company offering work to unemployed people and grew to six offices in Western Sydney and Newcastle.

CEO Mark King said the business was continuing to operate and hoped to trade out of its current position.

A spokesperson for administrators BDO Kendalls said it was too early to assess the likely funds shortfall.
