I don't know the truth I was simply stating my initial take on it. Unlike some elements of our society, I am capable of adjusting my position based on my own informed consideration as opposed to some dogmatic ideology to which I may subscribe or what I am told I must think.

Still reading but from what I can see so far UBI and Socialism both have their roots in attempting to address issues relating to the distribution of wealth triggered by significant changes to the roles of workers. They seem to take different paths to get the result but the desired outcomes appear quite similar.

Prima facie both seem to have quite noble and ethical aspirations but a little research it is not difficult to uncover the dismal historical failings of almost every socialist state. Incidentally, I am currently listening to a narration of the Gulag Archipelago which is providing me with an interesting insight into what people are capable of under the wrong circumstances.

My primary concern with UBI is that if it is set high enough to live on comfortably and there is no obligation to work for it then many people will simply opt-out of contributing, there will always be motivated people who wish to improve their lot, and there will always be those who will freeload given the slightest opportunity to do so. We have seen it to a degree with jobseeker during Covid where people are choosing options like a holiday on the taxpayer rather than actively seeking work.

Maybe I'm missing the point but I don't see why people who are motivated to contribute should be forced to support those who are not.

Please no *** arguments relating to our obligation as a society to support those who cannot support themselves as I agree that we should look after those who cannot look after themselves.
