If you currently earn $100,000 gross you continue to earn $100,000 gross and paid the additional $20,000 UBI. However, you are taxed an additional $20,000 in your job to pay for your $20,000 UBI. Tax thresholds are altered to tax the 0-20000 tax band. The barrier to earn a wage is completely removed because the people who are currently better off on welfare do not have that barrier to get past. Everybody who wants a better standard of living has it within reach as they can go and earn additional wages for whatever additional hours they want to work. Not to mention the massive government bloat/tumour that could be removed by simplifying the whole system with UBI. Id love to see a proper unbiased financial model created of such a system. I would also like to see housing benefits simplified using a similar model. Noew for a right wing rant... This current system breeds procreation for financial gain by the wrong people. The system rewards people who shouldn't be able to afford to be parents and punishes those who should. Working adults are holding off having kids until they can 100% afford them. As a poster above said this is causing an imbalance between the number of kids growing up at or under the poverty line. This is going to be a massive issue in years to come when a higher percentage of professional dole bludgers enter adulthood.

People with adequate intelligence and education plan ahead long term and decide to limit how many children they make, and plan ahead short term with the disciplined use of birth control. By contrast more of those in the lower IQ and education brackets do the opposite. This was happening long before John Howard's massive parent benefits came in.
