Manuka's New Zealand-based subsidiary, Trans Tasman Resources, holds the rights to the vast JORC certified Taraniki iron sands resource potentially worth many Billions.
Until now this massive resource has attracted a close to zero valuation, as permission to mine has been repeated been denied by the NZ government. No permission = no value.
However the election of the National (conservative) coalition in New Zealand has led to a vastly more favourable stance towards seabed mining.
The NZ government is now in fact now totally committed to make mining a key driver of the New Zealand economy, and has introduced legislation in December to massively streamline the mining approval process.
The NZ government has further identified TTR's Taraniki iron sands development as a "project of national importance", and the Taraniki project has been selected as 1 of 11 mining projects to be fast tracked for approval under the new legislation.
Despite these very positive developments, Manuka's share price has not yet reflected the potentially huge upside of the iron sands project, probably due to a continuing market perception of New Zealand as still Green Peace led and anti mining country.
But today the NZ government is totally committed to developing New Zealand’s mining industry and Manuka’s Taraniki iron sands mining project is a perfect strategic fit with their plans.
That is not to say that the Manuka Taraniki project will definitely get permission to mine, there is still the fast track approval process to be negotiated.
But the prospects of success do now look very good, as TTR has already put in place 82 strong environmental safeguards that have already been approved by the New Zealand Environmental Protection Agency.
There will almost certainly be legal objections raised by Greenpeace and others to seabed dredge mining,
However, the fact that key environmental protections have already been approved, and that new more liberal legislation has now been put in place these 'green' challenges will almost certainly ultimately fail.
Given all this, I see the TTR Taraniki iron sands project as a potentially huge driver of value for Manuka.
