    Individuals are considered members of the same species if they can successfully interbreed to produce fertile offspring.
    An equally used definition is one which states that members are part of the same species if there is gene flow between members of different populations.
    A Liger or Tion is not a separate species as it is not capable of perpetuating its chromosome number or its own integrity as a separate species. Its fecundity reduces rapidly over several generations to the point where it is an evolutionary dead-end.
    Evolution is clever in this respect as it eliminates competition for ecological niches by removing closely related species that compete for the same resources.

    There is only one human species alive today and that is Homo sapiens.
