Lucas BairdReporterMar 11, 2021 – 1.24pmJust $72 million of the government’s full $1.2 billion tourism rescue package will offset airfares to pandemic-hit areas reliant on travellers, former Qantas chief economist Tony Webber predicts, as he warns discounts may not be sufficient to encourage travel.
The government has refused to disclose exactly how much taxpayer cash it will hand Qantas and Virgin to save the jobs of 8600 workers whose roles depend on international travel. The airlines themselves are still working out the key details, such as the amount to be paid to individual staff.
