Presumably the backup is for a failure in the grid system. Both the battery and diesel generator will only provide backup for a limited period of time without further input. I thought the battery system would be sized to replace the diesel generator and thereby create a cost saving in terms of reliability and reduced maintenance. If you have to run both backups in case the grid drops out, there is no cost saving.
