I suspect the modus operandi is to remove dividends which reduces attractiveness to retail holders which suppresses the share price which facilitates creeping control via buybacks and the like.
Such is the fate of retail investors in majority controlled media entities. I'd normally give them a wide berth but I'm expecting a pretty good result and value appears somewhat compelling but for me this one has a limited time horizon before I'm out for good.
