SBM
Advantages:
- less formation damage from mud fluid invasion.
- has a lubricating effect...can result in overall faster ROPs and lowers risk of differential sticking but doesn't prevent it completely.
- a better choice where swelling clays are an issue.
Disadvantages:
- cost
- requires modifications to mud system and additional equipment (eg cuttings drier)
- health and safety issues (eg some people develop allergies to the stuff, cumbersome PPE required while working with the stuff)
- disposal of cuttings can be an issue.
