Multi-well pads becoming the norm


"Typically the evidence of a technological advancement is visibly apparent. However, occasionally the benefit is obscured from view.

So it is with horizontal drilling in shale formations. Whereas traditional, vertical wells require a separate pad for each well, Devon can drill several wells from a single location, thanks to horizontal drilling.

This practice of placing several wells on one pad benefits stakeholders and the company in numerous ways:

. Well pads generally are similar in size whether they contain one wellhead or a half-dozen, so placing multiple wells on the same pad can dramatically minimize surface disturbance.


· Multi-well pads are far more efficient, because once a well is drilled, the rig moves only 20 feet or so to drill the next one. This also reduces truck traffic, which benefits our neighbours."
