The disposal of nuclear waste is an interesting proposition.

At present, the only realistic method is geological storage - that is storage of waste deep underground in geologically stable places (eg Yucca Mountain).

The pace of technological development is so rapid that I don't think it will be long before a better method emerges. Already it is possible to reduce waste to a less radioactive state using high powered lasers to break down the atoms. This is only experimental at the moment.

A bette solution may be 50 years away when fusion reactors are developed. The idea will be to mimic the conditions inside the sun by containing the reactants within electromagnetic field "containers" and allowing high temperatures to fuse the atoms. The thinking is that once such high temperatures can be attained on earth, then the waste materials can be "biffed into the pot" to melt.

Another solution would be to put the waste into a rocket and fire the rocket into the sun. A simple solution but we could not take the risk of the rocket blowing up on the launch pad.
