Uranium ban: SIK gets annoyed while GE seeks stability9. november 2021 · 17:22by Ane-Marie Petersen , Andreas WilleIt is now forbidden to extract uranium. That was decided by a slim majority of Inatsisartut members today. The employers' association GE is not surprised by the decision, while SIK sees it as a sad day for the country. The Naalakkersuisut's ban on uranium mining has been adopted by 12 for and 9 against out of 26 members present.- It is a sad day for Greenland. This is how it sounds from SIK chairman Jess G. Berthelsen just after Inatsisartut with a slim majority decided a uranium ban today.ALSO READ No thanks to uranium: Inatsisartut votes for ban by slim majorityThus, the coalition consisting of Inuit Ataqatigiit and Naleraq has had one of their great election promises fulfilled. But by adopting the uranium ban, the coalition goes directly against its election promises, Jess G. Berthelsen believes. He recalls that IA also went to the polls to improve the living standards of the population. But a no to uranium is equal to a no to new revenues, the SIK chairman believes.- It will affect our members' finances to a very high degree. He can already predict the outcome of the next wage negotiations with the government.- We will be in wage negotiations with Naalakkersuisut next week. And I know exactly what they we respond to when we demand wage increases. That they can not afford it, says Jess G. Berthelsen.Hoping for stabilityWhile there is great annoyance at SIK, the reintroduction of a ban on uranium is not a surprise at the employers' association, GE.- It was not unexpected. That is the point at which the coalition came together. So I am not surprised that it has been adopted, says Christian Keldsen, director of the Greenland Chamber of Commerce. The fact that the law bans uranium has been passed does not mean that it will be like this forever. A new government can change the law again.- What we want is stability. That it does not affect our decisions and framework conditions in time and out of time, and create uncertainty for the companies that act and those that invest, and the activities we have in Greenland, says Christian Keldsen.Inuit Ataqatigiit and Naleraq have voted the bill through, while Siumut and Democrat are against. Atassut voted blank. The raw material exploration company, GME A / S, has a project in the Kuannersuit at Narsaq, where there are rare earth metals, where uranium acts as a by-product. The company has not returned KNR's request
