Portland nuke startup’s stock surges, continuing strong debut

Can a small modular reactor company fulfill its promise? So far, investors are behind it.

The promise is that factory-built reactors, sub-contracted out by NuScale, will be easier to deploy than conventional reactors that have fallen out of favor in many Western markets.

NuScale Power didn’t report any news on Wednesday, but investors took a shine to the Portland-based small modular nuclear reactor company.
Its stock (NYSE: SMR) surged nearly 11%, closing at $11.83, on a day when the S&P 500 rose 0.59%. NuScale trading was heavy at 1.2 million shares, around double its average.
NuScale is now up about 18% since it went public in early May. Over that same period, the S&P 500 is down nearly 5%.
NuScale got its public listing through a SPAC merger, a proposition grown increasingly risky in the past year. But as a unique pure-play nuclear stock, the company appeared to benefit from increasing optimism about nuclear power’s prospects, and that wave hasn’t ebbed.
NuScale has a strong cash position

The IPO netted NuScale $341 million, giving it a strong cash position in what could be a lengthy road to revenue and profitability.
Just one firm, Cowen, has so far begun analyst coverage of NuScale, but its first note was positive.
Cowen highlighted the pressing need many countries feel to decarbonize and achieve energy security. That’s been given “increased urgency” since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine exposed the risks of relying on natural gas imports, the firm said.
A first mover with NRC approval

“SMR is a first mover with (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) approval, and we see catalysts over the next two years potentially validating the business opportunity and driving upside to the stock,” Cowen wrote in a May 13 note.
NuScale was trading at $9.84 then, and Cowen set a $15 price target.
NuScale’s small modular reactor design puts it in the advanced nuclear category that has been getting a lot of attention. The promise is that factory-built reactors, subcontracted out by NuScale, will be easier to deploy than conventional reactors that have fallen out of favor in many Western markets.
