Just watched Borshoff discussing PDNs position and have to say, he could have put up a more compelling presentation. However, of more importance certainly to me, was the item immediately after this which discussed the Libyan crisis and that of the broader Arab nations. Of particular interest was one senior analyst's warning that the Saudis and the Iranians may well be set for military conflict in the near-mid term.
He then raised an important point in fact a CRITICAL point, and that is that the Iranians may attempt to blockade the clear passage through the gulf, of what is now 20% of the world's oil supply.
It needs to be restated that this is one analysts view, but consider this...
Given the general uncertainty of oil supply in the now very unstable Middle East, and compounded by the attendant increases in price per barrel, and the fossil fuel/greenhouse crisis facing the planet, for which Uranium is a key solution, this is emerging as a clear and present danger to energy supply on a much greater scale than the (apparently now manageable) status of ONE nuclear plant.
As the situation in the Middle East gets worse, another set of REAL BENEFITS of nuclear power will be irrefutable. These are...
Green energy for all nations irrespective of their resource wealth or lack thereof.
No need to transport through unstable sovereign areas,
No need for massive and expensive port/refinery infrastructure
No risk of wider oil/fossil accidental pollution (the destruction of the oil refinery adjacent Fukishima will be reveled to be of greater environmental impact than that of the nuclear reactor).
No loss of life from plant failure despite release of non-critical radiation levels as opposed to 11 people dead and ALL of the Southern Gulf states of the US impacted by the BP deep water well disaster last year.
The zero monopoly pricing situation in the nuclear industry that eliminates third world, despotic domination of global commodity pricing, just good old supply and demand. The list goes on
