Big thanks to China...again! But also our stupid fault for depending on China for almost everything we consume. There is light at the end of the tunnel as other markets are being sought for the supply of Urea.
Fortunately in extreme circumstances the Ad Blue system can be turned off in vehicles if it had to be through a reprogram of the ECU. I am sure the EPA wouldn't fine any trucking companies if they were unable to source the Ad Blue and had to disable the system temporarily to keep moving.
Ad Blue is only added to diesel exhaust at the end of combustion as the exhaust fumes leave the engine and travel the exhaust system to neutralise Nitrous Oxide (or NOX) emissions. Just as a DPF can be removed...not legally of course...with no effect on the engine if the ECU program is altered.
Many diesel cars can travel up to 10,000 kims without having to replenish their Ad Blue tank...
