Here is an article in McKinsey Quarterly that discusses the history of the splitting of the CEO and Chairman roles. It also points to the difference between the UK and US. It shows that recently some large US firms have split the roles for the purpose of better corporate governance.
Also, the notion that the company has been handled properly to date is not so. Shareholders ahd to get up in arms over the Crown affair. Now Nick has done a great job since then and before that, and I think he would make a good CEO or a good chairman.
I have to admit the reading the article has put me into the split the jobs camp. Anyway, Hope this helps.
