Greenland is such an important strategic partner that the EU should give even more money in subsidies to seal the bond and keep China at the door.
Venstre reports this on the day when EU President Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen visit Greenland to open an EU office in Nuuk.She is encouraged by Liberal member of the EU Parliament Morten Løkkegaard to broaden the cooperation so that it includes more than the current focus on education and green transition.-
Will be win-win-
An extended partnership agreement between the EU and Greenland will be win-win for both parties. The EU can help lift Greenland economically, and at the same time the cooperation can ensure the EU access to strategically important soils, says Morten Løkkegaard in a written comment.Precisely the rare earths are a decisive element in the EU president's diplomatic push towards the north.
Ursula von der Leyen is visiting Greenland at a time when the geopolitical situation has intensified, and where she wants to sign a new cooperation agreement.Global conflicts are reflected in the north, where Russia and China are trying to make their mark on both territories and resources in the Arctic.Positioning with patrols and possible bases have become decisive strength parameters for the great powers.
The same is true of Greenland's minerals and raw materials, which will become significant currency in the green transition, and which the world is now competing for.Greenland can help Europe and it is precisely the race that Morten Løkkegaard refers to, because Europe must be more self-sufficient.Greenland has 25 out of 34 raw materials that the EU has categorized as strategically important.- The EU will have to free itself from China when it comes to metals and minerals, which are essential for both the green and the digital transition, and here Greenland has a unique opportunity to move even closer to Europe, says Morten Løkkegaard.A larger subsidy can help to encourage Greenland to choose the EU for and China from, is the logic.The EU currently sends approximately DKK 250 million annually to Greenland in subsidies. However, Morten Løkkegaard will not put an amount on how much larger the subsidy should be.But Greenland should have a good negotiating position due to the geopolitical situation and Europe's urgent need for Greenland's resources, he points out.
