Even though Greenland chose to leave the EC in 1985, Greenland and the EU have nevertheless maintained their relationship and throughout the ages have made fishing agreements, agreements that gave Greenland money while the EU's member states got fishing quotas.

But over the years, the relationship has developed from fishing agreements to real partnership agreements, where the parties have focused on specific subjects, this applies especially in the field of education.

Climate action on the agenda

But in recent years, the global community has seen how much humans contribute to climate change, and efforts in the climate area have become an important factor in cooperation. This important topic will also be taken up during Ursula and Mette's visit.

Greenland already has a representation in Brussels. It was established way back in 1992. Now the EU has also got an office in Nuuk, which will be opened on Friday.

In connection with the EU's future permanent presence in Greenland, the Chairman of Naalakkersuisut, Múte Bourup Egede, and the Chairman of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen will sign a hosting agreement that forms the legal framework for the EU office in Nuuk .

During the visit, the green transition and the raw materials area will also be on the agenda. The EU and Greenland entered into a strategic partnership at the end of November 2023 for the development of value chains for sustainable raw materials.

Before arriving in Nuuk, Ursula and Mette visited the Faroe Islands. In connection with a new cooperation agreement, the Faroe Islands' Lagman Aksel V. Johannesen and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen have signed the new cooperation agreement.
