The scariest thing is the constitutional right to bear arms...a hurting person is an angry person. Add firearms to the equation and you get a bit of volatility.
The only resolution ultimately must be a return to more co-operative socially responsible values and creative solutions as with the New Deal etc. The rise of the TEA party may generate an equal and opposite reaction of social inclusiveness. Hard to say where such groups would get funding, but they will need to gather momentum or it will get really ugly.
The US is a massive place and has always included a third world (of uneducated people, immigrants and illegals etc) superimposed on the first.
