"Water Reuse for Sustainable Tourism"
In the Dominican Republic, 6 of the 32 provinces do not have sufficient water resources to meet demand while another 14 provinces are suffering from water scarcity and saline intrusion. Major cities and tourist areas have the additional problem of contaminated groundwater. Currently, in 2020, only 18% to 20% of wastewater is treated at the municipal level. In addition, macro infrastructure projects are extremely expensive and involve an estimated investment of over 6 billion dollars.
This creates the need for decentralized, efficient, and low-cost capital and operations systems.
Within the framework of the ASONAHORES 2022 Commercial Expo, our CEO Robert W. Crowley and Dario Perez, VP of Operations of Fluence Corporation LLC, unveiled the new MABR™ technology that offers modular and decentralized solutions for wastewater treatment, of very high quality that allows the conversion of effluents and the reuse of water for non-drinking needs such as irrigation, fire control, cooling, cleaning of areas, among others.
The tourism industry has a high and constant demand for quality water 24/7. They highlighted that ASPIRAL™ effluent treatment systems decentralized and in modular configurations allow hotels and resorts to partially meet this demand by reusing water with these systems that remove 96% of the nutrient load in a single step and with energy efficiency producing a high quality effluent suitable for reuse in irrigation of green areas, cleaning, fire control and cooling, thus creating a circular economy since by reusing water, the amount of primary water required is reduced and , therefore, reduces the demand for fresh water, especially in wells near the coasts where the fresh water table is limited. In addition, with MABR™ technology, it is possible to retro-fit existing systems that are generating unpleasant odors, that have high operating costs or that do not meet the standards of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources.
The executives concluded that this technology could considerably reduce the pressure on natural water resources in the country. As the demand for water increases, recycled water can be used to maintain water sources for critical ecosystems, such as mangroves and groundwater levels, guaranteeing the water supply that the tourism industry requires to continue being one of the the main engines of development for many years to come.
