US-China Clean Energy Research Center Starts With $150 Million Funding
A clean energy research center jointly funded by the United States and China has been put into operation with initial funds of more than $150 million, as the world's two largest carbon emitters step up efforts to advance clean energy technologies. The center will sponsor joint research and development by scientists and engineers from the two countries of clean energy technologies such as clean coal, clean vehicles, and energy-efficient building technologies, according to a statement by the U.S. Embassy. "The sharing of technologies is a very natural thing because of the large scale of development in China. The U.S. sees this is an opportunity, so we can help develop the new clean technologies with China. And we see this is a good market. We see it as a wonderful way to test technologies," U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said at a press event in Beijing Wednesday. China and the U.S. will each contribute half of the more than $150 million in public and private funding to support the center over five years. Steven Chu met Chinese Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang and Chinese National Energy Administration head Zhang Guobao during his visit to China. Asked about the U.S. probe into China's clean energy trade policies, Steven Chu said the U.S. subsidizes clean energy just as China does, but what the U.S. is asking for is that the subsidies are equally available to foreign companies. "Government officials on both sides, industry, national laboratories, Chinese scientists...all those people see the opportunities to collaborate in clean energy in the future", Steven Chu said. "Those are going to overwhelm any little road bump that we might have." -Wan Xu contributed to this article; Dow Jones Newswires; 8610-84007799; [email protected]
