I led a team of researchers at UQ developing machine learning technologies for ResApp. I believe our technology has the potential to be adapted as a rapid and scalable COVID detection method. It should also be possible to screen out healthy people discriminating people with respiratory diseases. Such a capability may help (when relaxing social distancing rules) to screen in people who are fit to go to work. It is possible our existing algorithms on pneumonia detection may be directly usable on COVID patients. We can build or update our algorithms rapidly if we get access to COVID subjects and resources become available. The technology does not require any medical training to use; it is available on a self contained iPhone. No other attachment or a network connection is required. Note, however, the technology is yet to be tested directly on COVID patients. I have been listed by Engineers Australia as one of Australia's Most Innovative Engineers.
