filtering the internet is along the same lines as the constant dumbing down of the education system and control of health care.
All socialists know they are on such weak ground that they need lots of stupid people to vote for them. The easiest way to make sure people are stupid is to get lots of lefties in the education system and ensure that they kids waste their time of aimless nonsense. Anything to do with critical thinking is certainly ignored and the focus is on socialist indoctination, political correctness (double think and newspeek) and other nonsense like gore's global warming scam.
You eventually get a significant portion of the population indoctrinated enough to vote you in and keep you in power. We seem to be close to that tipping point now.
SImilarly, a socialist government tends to also try to quickly get control of health care. This has a number of aims but one of them is to ensure that the quality of health care for elderly becomes very poor so they die quickly. When the older people are not around, there is no-one left to remember how things once used to be. You can convince the remaining indoctrinated kids that this current mismanagement is the way it always was.
Obviously this is done in stages over quite a few years, but each step is put in place by succesive labor governments and the steps are made to be very hard to reverse.
