Agreed oconnem. It is actually a mixture of responsibility. It is as much a responsibility of us Muslims. Our scholars of tradition always work on improving yourself before trying to advise others. This idea of victimhood which holds us back. There is no doubt poltical agendas by the nations in power is a massive contributor. But this doesn't stop us from continuing our own inner struggle - the jihad of the ego or self. While we accept the causes of the problem we need to be wary of causing greater carnage. Take Syria for example. I am a sunni and while I have great sympathy for the difficulties experienced by the Sunnis the risk of civil war meant that traditional scholars avoided confrontation. It better to be under an oppressor than cause civil war. At least a tyrant is predictable. Syria was a bastion of traditional Islam as was Mali and the infiltration of wahabism in Iraq, libya and Syria as in turkey and Egypt were minimal. Pakistan and afghanistan were the same as were Lebanon and most of Africa. Most of these regions are under threat in terms of the leaderships being overthrown and the vacuum filled withe the wahabi/salafi version. The problem is that as David pointed out the west cant keep supporting despots and religious zealots. Eventually once the Muslim world is under control the west is next. This is where the west needs to be part of the solution not continue to be part of the Problem.
