    "Market cheerleaders are now saying that "a government report showed a decrease in jobs that was only slightly higher than forecast, easing concern that the economic slowdown is worsening.""

    I think they mean that the decrease in jobs was pretty close to forecast - rather than a far greater loss of jobs than forecast. The result is that 'they think' the recession is not as deep as it otherwise might be.
