SRLs breakup with MCC happened shortly after we started hearing a lot of anti China sentiment. Especially from one particular US president.
We will never know if SR read the room and made that decision to walk away from MCC by himself, or a representative from Australia or the US told him to.
The project has never fully recovered after ditching MCC, hopefully we'll find out soon if the change in direction was encouraged by a carrot rather than a stick.
