The google flu trends data is based on people searching 'flu' on the net?
If most people put 'flu treatment' in search, many of the results will educate them on antiviral options. Armed with that knowledge there would be some pressure for doctors to prescribe those when they visit. People with money or education or knowledge aren't shy in suggesting options to doctors.
Of course, if the doctors are anything like mine, they will say antivirals aren't worth the effort.
