Thanks @PinkRocks27 for sharing your understanding of the current situation that was much appreciated and very informative.
I'd imagine if they start decreasing the FR application to make the uniform less heavy then that will impact on both the Flame Retardant ability and also the wash durability - so its going to be a fine line for them to tread - but they have been playing with these mixes before, but it seems its still not right - but then again perhaps they have to revisit the process now its a rolled application.
If you delve into the Marines Request for information they were very specific on their requirements e.g.
Be a 50/50 nylon/cotton blend, although other fiber types/blends and treatments will be considered
Shall meet the following FR requirements initially (before laundering) and after laundering (50 cycles (threshold) / 100 cycles (objective).
o No melt/no-drip
o No more than 2.0 seconds after flame(both warp and fill)
o Char length of no more than 6.0 inches (threshold) / 5.0 inches (objective)(both warp and fill)
o Less than 25% second- and third-degree burn injury during a four-second exposure, excluding head sensors; a three-second exposure may be considered.
Not present a dermal health hazard when used as intended and tested. The contractor must furnish information, which certifies that the finished product is composed of materials which have been safely used commercially, or provided sufficient toxicity data to show compatibility with prolonged, direct skin contact.
@PinkRocks27 - did you glean any further details on anything else from your communication?
Just wondering if with the Body armour whether we are potentially dealing with a supplier to the military or police / first responders - suspect that the dollars may not be as good as the FR uniforms as cooling is likely priced lower than FR and at a lower margin - and the body armour normally covers just the torso area - but would be another good win and it diversifies away from Bedding which we need.
