Mate, no. Coal produces more nuclear waste, as Radon. Nuclear is the way forward. First direct Uranium, then Thorium and finally Fusion. All the power the hairless monkeys could ever want for the next 20 generations. Thorium has a negative price at the moment as it's a waste product from rare earth mining.
Nuclear Waste? Yep that's a problem. So we are going to have to grow up as a species and sort it. First with storage and then by turning it into "gold". Example Carbon is used in the control rods in the "pile" and absorbs neutrons. It moves from C13 to C14. C14 is radioactive via beta decay (ie produces electrons) with a half life of 5,730 years. Where upon it turns into stable Nitrogen (80% of air). It has been postulated that the C14 can be sublimed into a diamond. A diamond that produces power for 5,730 years. ie A safe, dependable low power battery which automatically recycles itself into safe air ="gold". Just don't chew it.
Solar, Wind just isn't energy dense enough for humans to advance. It's still awesome, especially in Australia and Texas. But Germany, not so much unless you want to turn Amish or burn Russian gas. Solar produces FAR more waste. People seem to forget that solar panels have life time and need to be replaced. Cover the deserts with solar panels. Okay. Where does the solar panels go in 30 years time, when they stop working? Who is going to pay to clear up that mess? Do you honestly think that all those solar panels being sent to third world countries are going to be sensibly returned for recycling? How many mega tonnes of waste is that? Do you think our children's children will be praising us for this global mess?
All disclaimer. Sorry for the rant.
Fun fact: The oldest known fission reactor is 2 billion years old and formed naturally. Ergo Gaia went nuclear, long before we did. Is she telling us something?
