Critical minerals – Australia’s critical minerals – will beessential if the world is to avoid catastrophic climate change.

We are in the enviable position of holding some of the world’s richest deposits of critical minerals like lithium, cobalt, vanadium and significant deposits of rare earth elements. These minerals are crucial to clean energy technologies such as electric vehicles, storage batteries, solar panels and wind turbines, and for a range of high-technology defence and medical applications.

The compact signed between Biden andAlbanese establishes two ministerial-level engagements to pursue co-operationon the clean energy transition and critical minerals.

I will be spearheading a newAustralia-United States Taskforce on Critical Minerals that will fast-trackcritical minerals supply chain development between our two countries. Thistaskforce will be administered by my department in co-operation with the USNational Security Council.

It will work with industry leaders todevelop and expand reliable, responsible and secure global access to criticalminerals.
