I worked on large parallel computers about 35 years ago. About 75% of our advance research was funded by Darpa. The funds for our projects were sighed by President and after a year of submitting plans and then being asked for changes we thought we would receive funds from DARPA shortly, it took 2 years. Luckily we also had grants from NOAA For predicting weather. IT worked well we could predict weather With 95% accuracy 5 days in advance. The only draw back was it took 7 to 9 days to collect the data, enter it, and compute what would happen in 5 days. It may seem funny now but most of that research was the foundation for today's weather predictions. That work showed that collecting and entering data was far more time consuming than the processing with Parallel computers. This caused a big change in where research was directed to. Even to day accuracy is limited to the size of the arrays of data. Not computing power.
