To get the best out of charting read Technical Analysis of the Futures Markets by John J Murphy. It is basically the bible and provides a fabulous understanding of the foundation of TA. It has helped me time and again with timing, that said, I base my investments on fundamentals and use charts as a tool to try to optimise entry and exit points.
