I find it an interesting show.
Some people cannot handle being alone also it is rare to be totally alone for extended periods. I noticed they had some military people, again they might be good with survival skills but they would not be used to being alone. Also they seem to recruit people with family. I walked the Appalachian Trail and someone said it was the nearly married or the nearly dead. Kind of true as these are the ones who have less commitments and are able to spend 4 to 6 months away from home.
There are some who enjoy solitude and even crave it, probably not volunteering for a TV show.
