SW, the problem so far is the key industry figures, World Diamond Council, Natural Diamond Council and others have either been on the wrong side of the Russian argument or have been silent.
They have taken a short term view of no Russian goods means no work for many in the industry, they apparently have not looked at the longer implications of the industry image that had worked hard to be ethical after "blood diamonds". This was the perfect opportunity for them to demonstrate all the PR was not just PR spin.
If they don't change tact soon they may have left the door open for man made diamonds to take a more prominent role or even change buying habits away from diamonds.
The whole image of diamonds is about giving/love/memories you don't want the image of children being blown up!
