The Great Mariannes Turkey Shoot SHOULD have told the Japanese military that the war was lost. They lost 3 - 400 planes and crew in two days as part of the Battle of the Philippines Sea which was a disaster.

The loss of Okinawa at great cost in American lives and greater loss of Japanese should have left them in no doubt.

The fire-bombing of Tokyo with over 100,000 lives lost should have written that in neon lights but the Emperor listened to his war cabinet and decided to hold out for better surrender terms threatening a qtr million American dead if they invaded the Home Islands.

If the US President refused to use the bomb and invaded the Home Islands he would/should have been tried for treason. Running up the white flag was ALWAYS an option for Japan. the senseless deaths were on the Emperor'd head.

Besides, ten times more Japanese would have died had the war ground out to the last man standing, which was always the preferred option of Japan.
