    Hi michinyon,

    It turns into 18hours because the direct flight path to Joburg takes you over the top of, or just to the west of Melbourne. The reason VBA has to go via perth is because they have 777's, which only have 2 engines, which requires them to stay closer to airports, thus taking longer to fly because of these extra miles.
