Joshua Sharfstein, acting commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, said the agency is working with pharmaceutical companies to help them better understand the standards needed for a swine flu vaccine to get approval. He noted that only six companies are registered to make vaccines. GlaxoSmithKline PLC (GSK) and a unit hold two of the vaccine registrations. The other companies are Novartis (NVS), MedImmune Inc., CSL Biotherapies Ltd., and Sanofi-Aventis SA (SNY).
